Ilustrarte is an international, biennial contest and exhibition for modern children’s book illustration held in Lisbon. For the 6th edition architects Pedro Cabrito and Isabel Diniz designed an exhibition space inspired by colourful toy blocks.

“For this Ilustrarte 14, we have crossed illustration for children with the playful and creative dimension of the act of playing, in a resolution that explores the formal characteristics of the renowned colorful toy blocks, timeless in its simplicity and potential for discovery.” says Cabrito and Diniz.

“These objects remain recognizable and communicative, extracted from the daily iconography, transforming banal into an workout that brings us closer to the creative process of illustrating.”

“Starting from this simple vocabulary of prismatic elements, we decided to associate a new material – higher density foam – with an attractive sensory high quality, inducing a tactile encounter and a playful interaction, in brief, stimulating imagination and participation.”

“It is noteworthy that the very first notion model has been literally assembled using a set of blocks purchased at a toy store.”

In all, 150 illustrations were shown in sets of foam blocks grouped, combined and recombined using a purely recreational logic, “extending the graphic game of the illustrations to a volumetric game that transforms space and defies our want to play.”

Belgium’s Grand-Hornu Images is dedicating its next exhibition to Finnish architect and designer Alvar Aalto (1898-1976), one particular of the pioneers in the quest for options to ideal the lighting inside buildings.

The exhibition is divided into two sections the first is an installation, a stroll across a pontoon suspending over water, in which Aalto’s creations hang and reflect their light, the second, archive documents, images and drawings that describe the genesis of Aalto’s lights, their mechanics and their intrinsic hyperlinks with architecture.

“You can actually see the quality of the light, the chiaroscuro contrasts and reflections, in an expertise made to remind us of the significance of nature in Alvar Aalto’s design and architecture. The complete exhibition shows the extent to which, taken out of their architectural context and functioning as isolated units, every single light becomes a element of a spatial and contextual expertise.”

The exhibition, from February 9 to Could 4, 2014, presents 6 projects that have been selected to illustrate the emergence of Alvar Aalto’s most iconic lights, inside the general context of his architectural operate.
