Japanese designer Tokujin Yoshioka’s fascination with glass and crystal has been expressed in each stand-alone sculptural installations and strong glass furnishings. No wonder, then, his Sparkle stools and tables for Kartell astound for their uncanny replication of weighty cut glass, dazzlingly realized in Kartell’s trademark (lightweight) polycarbonate.
The Sparkle collection’s faceted surface, produced by a procedure of polycarbonate ‘pleating,’ is something of a technological breakthrough, every single twist of material resulting in a reflecting and refracting of light to mesmerizing crystalline effect. 1st unveiled at the Milan Furnishings Fair in 2013, the Sparkle collection will be presented at this year’s Salone Internazionale del Mobile in a variety of new colorways, from bright yellow to smokey grey—fresh hues which lend the pieces an air of contemporary informality without ceding an ounce of their jewel-like splendor.
